We all love socialising with our pets. The bonds we form grow stronger the more time we spend together. While we humans accept that we can’t be with our pets all the time, it’s much harder for our pets to understand.
Some dogs seem to cope well with being alone for a period of time, however others struggle and show distress when separated from their owners. It is also a mistake to assume that separation issues don’t affect cats, too. There are many misconceptions that cats are independent and solitary creatures, however, they can still require companionship too.
How to tell if your pet has separation issues
These are some signs to look out for:
- A change in their sleeping patterns
- Behaving differently towards you or other pets
- A change in their posture such as keeping their head down
- Going to the toilet indoors, or cats not using litter trays
- Hiding away, avoiding company
- Unexpected weight loss or gain
- Barking, whining or meowing more than usual
- Grooming themselves repeatedly
The great news is there are many ways to help your cat or dog adjust and feel more relaxed when left alone for short periods of time. Here are some suggestions that might help:
Get your cat or dog used to your absences
Slowly increase your pet’s alone time. They will gradually understand that they can still feel relaxed and comfortable when you’re not there. You can use food filled toys to help occupy them during this time.
Their own safe space
Create a comfortable and safe area for your cat or dog to spend their alone time whilst you’re away. A pet den is a safe and secure space to help your cat or dog feel relaxed. Give them some toys to keep them amused.
Install a stair gate
Stair gates are dog-friendly as well as child-friendly! If you want to keep your dog in one room while you’re not there, a stair gate across the door will allow them to see, smell and hear outside the room.
Background noise
Leaving the radio or TV on at a very low volume gives a little background noise and could help your pet feel less isolated.
Give them Zylkene
Give your cat or dog Zylkene calming supplement to help them cope with separation and help them relax.
