Human Versus Non-Human Names

Do you prefer to give your dog a name fit for a human? Or perhaps you like to have a bit of fun with your pet’s name? We pawed through the top 200 names to find out how many dogs had human names compared to names inspired by other things such as food or cartoon characters.

We found that the overwhelming majority of dogs had been given standard human names, with just 17 non-human names in the mix. Some of the most common non-human dog names included:

  • Bear
  • Rocky
  • Zeus
  • Gizmo
  • Ziggy
  • Shadow
  • Scooby
  • Patch
  • Rusty
  • Prince

Food-inspired Dog Names

Of those non-human names, many were inspired by food, particularly sweet treats! The most popular food-inspired dog name was Rolo, followed by Fudge, Honey, Pepper and Cookie.

Other food-inspired dog names that we particularly liked included:

  • Magnum
  • Pringle
  • Spud
  • Halloumi
  • Popcorn

Character-inspired Dog Names

What better way to honour your favourite fictional character than by naming your dog after them? We looked through the top 200 names to find out which well-known characters were beloved enough to become the given name of your dogs.

Presumably off the back of the immensely popular Marvel TV series which came out in 2021, Loki takes the top spot as the most popular character-inspired dog name. Other front-runners took inspiration from the Lion King, as well as other Disney animations like Lady and the Tramp and Frozen:

  • Simba
  • Merlin
  • Nala
  • Lady
  • Elsa
