Support a healthy liver in your pet

The liver is the biggest internal organ in the body and it performs many important functions essential to life, including:

  • Aiding digestion
  • Extracting nutrients
  • Breaking down drugs and toxins
  • Immune function
  • Vitamin storage

Support a healthy liver in your pet

The liver has a tremendous ability to regenerate, which is why, when the balance of optimal liver health is tipped in the the wrong direction, early indications that something is amiss with it’s function can be hard to spot.

What happens when liver function isn’t as it should be?

Whatever the underlying cause, the compromised liver becomes stressed due to the production of free radicals or damaging Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS).

A healthy liver is usually producing lots of antioxidants (a main one being glutathione) which should help to stabilise the ROS, but unfortunately, if the liver isn’t working as it should be, it produces less glutathione. This can cause oxidative stress and injury to the liver.

What are the signs of liver disease?

The signs of liver disease can be very similar to other conditions. If you notice any of the following signs in your pet, contact your vet. Symptoms to look out for include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Increased thirst
  • Lack of energy
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and whites of eyes)

What could help to increase glutathione production?

Without going into molecular science too much!

  • S-adenosylmethionine or (SAMe) is essential to the production of glutathione so is therefore beneficial to help support livers under stress.
  • Silybin (the most active component of milk thistle) helps to support glutathione and has a direct antioxident activity.

Are there supplements that could help?

Zentonil Advanced, are supplements containing a pure, stable form of SAMe which is suitable for cats and dogs. SAMe is converted into an antioxidant which helps neutralise free radicals that build up in the liver.

Zentonil Advanced also contains Silybin in a form that allows optimum absorption.

As it’s recommended that these are given on an empty stomach for optimal absorption, Zentonil Advanced tablets are flavoured and can be split, crushed or chewed and are suitable for both cats and dogs.

Hepaticare contain S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), Vitamin E, Vitamin K and silybin. Hepaticare helps neutralise damaging free radicals produced by the liver during times of stress as well as to support the normal blood clotting process.

Important:- You don’t need a prescription to buy Zentonil Advanced or Hepaticare but ALWAYS check with your vet that these would be of support to, and suitable for your pet. Your veterinarian will recommend and advise the dosage and how you should use Zentonil Advanced.

Once you’ve spoken to your vet, you can buy Zentonil Advanced and Hepaticare from Animed Direct, along with all your pet’s regular food, flea and worming treatments.
