Top calming products for pets

There’s a range of calming products which are designed to help your pet cope better with stress, whether it’s holidays, kennel/cattery stays, trips to the vets, new additions to the household or of course, Fireworks and party season.

“I’m not drugging my pet!” is sometimes a thought people might have had when they hear the words “calming” products, but these products are specifically for the benefit of pets, and are definitely not a type of sedation given to animals when they’re about to have a procedure done at the vets!

Understanding the differences between the products and the active calming ingredient can help you make the best choice for your pet. It may be that one doesn’t appear to work so well, in which case, you’ll be able to make an informed choice about an alternative product which uses a different method of calming or ingredient.

Here are some of our top calming products for pets:

Natural ingredient based calming supplements

1) Zylkene

Zylkene is a natural based complementary supplement from Vetoquinol which can be given to cats and dogs a couple of days prior to a stressful event, including fireworks.

It contains casein, (a protein in milk which is known to promote the relaxation in new-borns). It’s not a sedative, but promotes relaxation. It’s a non-drowsy formula and is lactose free.

Given daily, Zylkene comes in capsule form – ideal for popping into food for dogs or alternatively, can be broken open, enabling owners to sprinkle the powder directly into food – much easier than a tablet if you have a cat!

Zylkene can be used longer term if your pet is very anxious and can also be used in combination with pheromone-based products listed further down the blog.
