Dog Easter Egg Recipe

For us humans, there’s nothing better than enjoying a delicious chocolate egg at Easter time, but sadly, chocolate is toxic to dogs. But don’t worry, they don’t need to miss out on all the fun! We’ve got a brilliant, dog-friendly ‘Easter egg’ recipe for you to make at home. These tasty egg-shaped dog biscuits are very simple to make, using only a handful of ingredients that you’ve probably already got in your cupboard. Since these ‘Easter eggs’ are in biscuit form, they don’t pose a choking hazard like small chocolate eggs do either. As well as having a brilliantly satisfying crunch that your dog will love, they also contain parsley for a splash of spring green colour, and fresher breath for your pup!

Once you’ve whipped up your dog Easter eggs for your pup to enjoy, why not create a fun Easter egg hunt too? Read on to find out how!

How to Make Your Own Dog Easter Eggs

You will need:

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 225g plain flour
  • 100g dried parsley
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter (xylitol-free)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Egg-shaped cookie cutter

If you don’t have an egg-shaped cookie cutter, don’t worry! You can easily cut them free-hand using the point of a sharp knife.

Make sure that the peanut butter you use is xylitol-free as this sweetener is toxic to dogs. It should also be low in (or ideally free from) salt and sugar.

Method:

  • Preheat your oven to 180 degrees and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.
  • Mash the banana.
  • Add the flour, parsley, peanut butter and egg to the mashed banana in a mixing bowl and combine them all thoroughly.
  • Leave the mixture to rest for five minutes. You may need to add some extra flour if the mixture seems too wet.
  • Roll out the mixture on a flat, floured surface and cut into egg shapes using a cookie cutter.
  • If you fancy getting creative, try creating an embossed pattern on your dog Easter egg biscuits with indentations. You can use a toothpick or a knife to create zig-zags, dots, hearts and more, which will remain visible once cooked. See below for some design inspiration!
  • Bake for around 35 minutes, or until golden.
  • Leave your dog Easter eggs to cool completely before giving them to your pup.

Organise a Dog Easter Egg Hunt!

Now you’ve made your dog-friendly eggs, it’s time for the dog Easter egg hunt to begin! With their excellent sense of smell, dogs are even better at scavenger hunts than us. And with the tantalising smell of your Easter egg dog biscuits in the air, we just know your pup can’t wait to get started!

With your dog out of sight, simply hide a few of your dog Easter eggs in a variety of places. You can stick to doing this in just one room, or challenge your dog further by hiding them throughout your home – or even the garden! You might want to make a note of where you’ve hidden them all so you can check that there are none left at the end.

Great hiding places for a dog Easter egg hunt include under tables and chairs, under the corner of rugs, or even in open cardboard boxes. You know your dog best, so make sure you tailor the difficulty of the hunt to their level of ability. Don’t make it too difficult!

If you plan to do an Easter egg hunt with your dog, just make sure you have baked small biscuits, as treats should only be given in moderation. Alternatively, if your dog needs to manage their weight, you could hide toys or pieces of their kibble as the main part of the hunt, and give them just one dog Easter egg biscuit at the end as a special reward.

Wrapping Up

Baking your very own dog Easter eggs is easier than you might think, and your dog will no doubt thank you for them! Make sure your pup enjoys them in moderation as part of a balanced diet, and be sure to keep all chocolate eggs well away from them. We hope you have a great time organising your Easter egg hunt with your pooch, and we wish you a very happy Easter!
