The multi-modal approach

Cosequin DS for dogs may be used in conjunction with some or all of the following treatment approaches as part of a comprehensive solution for joint health support. Always discuss your options with your vet first and decide on the appropriate regimen for your dog together.

Exercise: Appropriate daily exercise is an essential element for keeping your dog’s joints flexible and muscles strong.

Diet: Research shows that eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), an omega-3 fatty acid, can help reduce inflammation, help limit damage to cartilage, and reduce the symptoms of OA.

NSAIDs: Dogs with OA may benefit from a class of pain medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These medications help manage chronic pain and inflammation.

Physical rehabilitation: Physical rehabilitation for dogs uses applications of cold and heat, massage, stretching, and range-of-motion exercises to maintain joint health and muscle strength.

Adjunct therapy: Other medications or therapies (e.g. acupuncture, hydrotherapy) can be used to help relieve your dog’s pain and/or improve mobility.

Healthy cartilage is key to healthy joints

There are many reasons why your dog’s cartilage can wear down more quickly than it can naturally regenerate; these include age, injury or trauma to the joint, obesity, and genetics. This imbalance can lead to osteoarthritis (OA), a degenerative disease characterised by painful joints and reduced (or restricted) movement.

Areas affected by joint disease

In dogs, joint disease most often affects the hip, knee, elbow, shoulder, and ankle. While joint disease can’t be cured, it can be managed with good veterinary and home care. At every stage, supporting joint health is vital to a happy, active lifestyle.
