How to Use Zylkene for Dogs During Fireworks Season

It’s not uncommon for dogs to experience stress and anxiety, especially around loud noises like fireworks or in the face of environmental changes. Zylkene is an effective calming treat for dogs that helps to reduce those negative feelings. A versatile supplement, Zylkene can be given to your dog in a few different ways, which we’ll detail in this blog. Once you’ve found the way that works best for your pet, stressful events like Fireworks Night need not be such a worry.

What is Zylkene for Dogs?

The number one calming supplement in the UK, Zylkene has clinically proven calming properties to help relax your dog. It contains casein, a natural ingredient derived from a protein in milk. Casein has a protein molecule that is known to calm newborns after breastfeeding.

These calming tablets for dogs come in a capsule form. This means they can be taken whole, or sprinkled into your dog’s food.

You should give your dog Zylkene one or two days before the stressful event takes place. Zylkene can be a great way to calm dogs during fireworks for example, so the best time to give the tablets to your dog is a couple of days before your local fireworks display.

How to Use Zylkene for Dogs

There are a few different ways you can administer these calming tablets for dogs.

Wrapped in food

The first way is to wrap the capsule in a tasty food, such as ham or cheese. You can also use pill assist treats which are specially designed to mask pills. Covering the Zylkene capsule in something delicious makes it much more appealing to your dog!

Sprinkle it Into Your Dog’s Dinner

Some more discerning dogs might not be fooled by the food wrap trick. In that case, you may like to try breaking the Zylkene capsule apart, and sprinkling the powder directly into your dog’s food. This way they won’t be able to eat around it, or spit it out!

Use a KONG

Our personal favourite method of giving a dog their Zylkene supplement is to use a stimulating treat filler toy. Simply mix the Zylkene powder into a strongly flavoured wet food, such as a tin of Applaws Taste Toppers. Then, spoon the mixture into a KONG. This makes for a fun game for your dog, providing mental stimulation. Plus, it’s a nice, easy way to give them their Zylkene.

Wrapping Up

We hope at least one of these different ways to give Zylkene to your dog will go down a treat! If you’d like to explore even more ways you can administer supplements to your pet, check out our blog, ‘Top Tips for Getting Your Pet to Take Their Supplements’.

Fireworks Night doesn’t have to be a dreaded annual event. By using Zylkene for dogs in the lead up to Bonfire Night, you can help to reduce your pet’s anxiety. Combine the use of calming supplements with other preparations, such as making a den for your dog, which can act as a safe retreat. You can also try using different sounds to block out the noise of fireworks for your pet, and ensure you walk them during daylight hours so there are no surprise fireworks while they’re out and about.
